Who we are and what this covers

Polifine is a free, nonpartisan voter-information service that helps people compare candidates on their own ballot using documented public evidence. The Polifine application and website are managed by Polifine team ("Polifine," "we," "us"), and technical support provided and operated by MoJo Global Group, LLC. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what we will never do with it. It applies to polifine.org and to the Polifine mobile applications.

The short version: we collect the minimum needed to show you your ballot and remember your answers. We do not sell your personal information, and we never share your individual answers with any candidate, campaign, party, or political committee.

Information we collect

  • Account information: your email address and a password (stored only as a secure hash). A display name if you choose to provide one.
  • Location for ballot lookup: your ZIP code, which we use to identify your voting district. We do not collect precise GPS location.
  • Your survey responses: the causes you select, where you place yourself on each issue spectrum, and how important each issue is to you.
  • Mobile number, only if you choose to add one: used solely to send a one-time verification code confirming you control the number.
  • Optional year of birth, if you choose to provide it, used only for aggregate civic research.
  • Usage and device information: pages or screens viewed, approximate region derived from IP address, device type, and browser, collected to keep the service working and secure.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: see Section 8.

How we use your information

  • To identify your district and show the correct races and candidates.
  • To calculate and display how your positions compare with candidates’ documented records.
  • To save your history so you can revisit past comparisons.
  • To verify your identity when you sign in, register, or reset a password.
  • To operate, secure, debug, and improve the service.
  • To produce aggregate, de-identified civic research (see Section 6).
  • To comply with law and to enforce our Terms of Service.

Text messages (SMS)

If you add a mobile number, we send a one-time passcode to confirm you control that number. SMS is used only for account verification — registration, sign-in, and password reset. We do not send marketing, promotional, campaign, election, or fundraising messages by SMS. Message and data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help. You may remove your mobile number at any time in account settings, which stops all SMS.

Carrier commitment: mobile information will never be sold or shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. All other categories of data sharing described in this policy exclude text-messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third party.

What we never do

  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We do not share your individual survey answers, matches, or contact details with any candidate, campaign, political party, political committee, or advocacy organization.
  • We do not use your data to target you with political advertising.
  • We do not sell or share your mobile number with anyone for marketing.

Aggregate and de-identified research

Polifine publishes and may license statistical summaries of how groups of users prioritize issues — for example, “in one Michigan district, housing was among the top three issues for a majority of respondents.” These summaries are aggregated across many users, contain no names, emails, phone numbers, or precise locations, and are produced only at a minimum group size so that no individual can be identified or singled out. Any recipient of aggregate data is contractually prohibited from attempting re-identification. You consent to this use when you create an account, and you may contact us to opt out of having your responses included in future aggregate datasets.

When we share information

  • Service providers who host, secure, or support the service (for example cloud hosting and messaging providers), under contracts limiting them to our instructions.
  • Aggregate, de-identified data as described in Section 6.
  • Legal compliance: if required by law, subpoena, or valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or security of users or the public.
  • Business transfer: if the service is transferred to another organization, your information may transfer with it, subject to this policy.

Cookies and analytics

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember preferences, and understand aggregate usage. Where required, analytics and advertising-related technologies load only after you consent. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some cookies may affect functionality.

How long we keep information

We keep account information while your account is active. Anonymous guest sessions are deleted after 30 days. Verification codes are deleted after they expire. If you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal information within 30 days, except where we must retain it for legal or security reasons. Aggregate data that no longer identifies you may be retained indefinitely.

Your choices and rights

  • Access, correct, or delete your account information in settings or by contacting us.
  • Remove your mobile number at any time to stop all SMS.
  • Request a copy of your data or ask us to delete it by emailing [email protected].
  • Ask to be excluded from future aggregate datasets.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under state privacy law, including the right to know, delete, correct, and to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. We do not sell personal information as that term is defined under those laws.

Children

Polifine is intended for people who are eligible to vote or preparing to vote and is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We protect information using encryption in transit, hashed passwords, access controls, and audit logging. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. If we make a material change, we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and we will update the date at the top of this page.
